Economic Development

The GreeNWAy committee has partnered with the City of Fayetteville, the University of Arkansas Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) and Applied Sustainability Center and various other non-government entities and community leaders to develop the “green” certification process. The goal of the GreeNWAy Initiative is to recognize businesses for their sustainability processes as well as to promote environmental awareness. Their efforts not only promote “green” business practices but can also result in monetary savings in the long run. No matter how large or how small the business, a GreeNWAy certification is a very desirable achievement. The program objectives are to provide affordable sustainability expertise and to support our local businesses so that they may flourish in a green economy.

The University of Arkansas SIFE will perform an audit on each business using a scorecard that covers six categories: water, waste, energy, people, purchasing and education. A standardized baseline score must be met for a business to be eligible. This independent audit is what sets the GreeNWAy Initiative apart from other similar programs by providing validity to the scores that are gathered by each business. If the business meets all criteria for the program, they become a GreeNWAy certified business. The business must also submit energy usage data for water, gas and electric that is tracked in a carbon footprint measurement tool that shows the trends and reductions in each as a result of participating in the program.

In a community which celebrates and promotes best practices for green sustainable actions in business and everyday life, this chamber program will assist our member businesses to stand out in that environment and get public recognition for their commitment and actions to promote green practices. Many perks are associated with a GreeNWAy certification, such as a listing on a special page of the Chamber website, a special category listing in our member directory for “green” businesses, a decal for display in the front window or door to the building, a GreeNWAy plaque for display by the business and a special green ribbon-cutting facilitated by the Chamber. There are also available tax incentives and discounts on green products that can be awarded to businesses that achieve such a certification. For more information about the GreeNWAy Initiative, please contact Curtis Northcutt or Joy Heuer at the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce 479-521-1710.
