Economic Development & Sustainability

clock

Northwest Arkansas has seen a bounty of new businesses locating here, opening the doors for current and future economic development and redevelopment undertakings. This progressive outlook on development is facilitated by such prominent entities as the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District, local chambers and cities, the Fayetteville Economic Development Council and the resources of University of Arkansas.

Large-scale, mid-sized and smaller businesses have established themselves in the region and continue to research and implement new developments within the area and around the world. Sustainability has been a top priority for many of these entities, with the dominant drivers of environmental initiatives including Wal-Mart (Bentonville), Tyson Foods (Springdale) and J.B. Hunt (Lowell)—among numerous others in the region.

While the mere presence of these commercial powerhouses—all leading companies in the U.S. and the world—have significantly aided in spurring rapid economic growth in northwest Arkansas, each also are leading the way for the use of innovative environmental implementations in the “Green Valley.” Examples of these initiatives include Wal-Mart’s offering of earth-friendly products, which includes reusable shopping bags made from recycled materials on sale for just $1; Tyson Foods’ creation of the Tyson Renewable Energy division; and J.B. Hunt’s ingenuity in steps to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its transportation of products—a measure that has earned the company recognition from the EPA as a SmartWay Transport Partner.

More opportunities for sustainability certainly are on the way!
