INN AT CARNALL HALL

HISTORY OF CARNALL HALL

Constructed in 1906 for use as a women’s dormitory at the University of Arkansas, Carnall Hall has remained a gem in the community and the surrounding northwest Arkansas region for over 100 years. The hall received its name in honor of Miss Ella Howison Carnall, an associate professor of English and Modern Languages between 1891 and 1894 who exuded excellence as a student and a teacher, becoming a true role model for the students of the university during her tenure.

Prior to its development, there had been no dormitory for the young women of the university. The Victorian-style facility was designed to encompass bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room and an independent steam heating plant in one building—something that had not yet been conceived on the campus. Its location at the far end of campus certainly was strategic, as it was the farthest building away from the boys’ dormitories.

Carnall Hall endured extensive remodeling and enhancement between 1959 and 1960. Its use as a women’s dormitory ended after 1967. Two years later, the Phi Gamma Delta (Fijis) fraternity moved in, as did a couple of university departments in 1973. The fraternity utilized the hall until 1977, and the educational departments relocated into the newly renovated Old Main building in 1991—leaving the hall unused.

Attempts for remodeling and modernizing the building, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Place in December of 1982, failed in 1992 due to lack of funds. The plan was revived and approved in 2001, with use of a private developer, to transform the historic hall into an inn and restaurant. The extensive $6.9 million project was completed in August of 2003, with the dedication ceremony held shortly after on September 23, 2003.
