The Jan & Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning
Helping create a better community through service and learning
In 2007-08, over 10,000 Fresno State students provided in excess of 667,000 hours of service to the community. Does this number include you?
“A university education cannot be considered successful unless our graduates have developed not only their intellectual abilities, but also their personal, professional and civic skills. Community service-learning is an excellent tool to achieve all of these goals.”
John D. Welty, President California State University, Fresno
Fresno State’s new goal is to provide 1 million hours of service annually. How will you help reach that goal?
What Impact Will YOU Make?

Throughout its 15-year history, the Richter Center has been the flagship for Fresno State’s service efforts. They operate at the place where the needs of the community and the resources of the university intersect. And they recognize the important roles students play in creating a safer, thriving and vibrant community.
If you’re thinking about getting involved in community service, the Richter Center is the place to start. Maybe you’re interested in service as a personal commitment, to fulfill a class requirement or for career experience. Whatever the reason, the benefits are endless.
From general volunteer experiences to in-depth and career-related service experiences, the Richter Center coordinates and supports a variety of outstanding programs, which serve you, the university and the entire community.
Fresno State’s Third National Championship
The Presidential Award for General Community Service
Last year, Fresno State brought home its third national championship—the Presidential Award for General Community Service. This award, given to Fresno State by the Corporation for National and Community Service, is the highest federal recognition a school can receive for its commitment to service- learning and civic engagement.

Fresno State has a long-standing tradition of engaging in learning opportunities that expand beyond the physical boundaries of the campus and into the community. What does this mean for you? It means that, as a Fresno State student, you are supported and encouraged to engage with the local community to deepen your educational
experience while providing support and services to the community in which you live. At the same time, you can be proud to be a part of an award-winning institution that values community and civic engagement.
The Richter Center Ambassadors
The Richter Center Ambassadors are student-leaders dedicated to promoting and supporting the service efforts of Fresno State. They provide peer-to-peer support for Fresno State students who want to be more involved in service and volunteerism in the community. Visit the Richter Center Ambassador blog for up-to-date information on service opportunities at www.richtercenter.wordpress.com.
