Community Overview

neighborhood

CSU-Fresno’s sprawling 388-acre main campus, along with its more than 1,000-acre University Farm, is situated in the northeastern portion of Fresno, bordering the city of Clovis. Fresno is a diverse community of more than 486,000 residents (Source: California Department of Finance, 2008), represented by an array of nationalities. This diversity gives way to a vibrant community culture that is experienced through a number of exciting festivals and ethnic restaurants.

The area is proud of a rich past that extends back more than 140 years ago. After a devastating flood occurred on Christmas Eve of 1867, residents of Millerton were prompted to relocate to what would become current-day Fresno—a name that was derived from the abundance of local ash trees (Fresno is the Spanish word for “ash tree”). The settlement, then referred to as Fresno Station, experienced a surge in growth and development with the coming of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1872. The western town suffered two major fires in the early 1880s, but quickly picked itself up and obtained incorporation as a city in 1895. Today, Fresno is a prosperous city, offering all the urban conveniences while maintaining a unique ease of life.

While the university is based in Fresno, it also has a major presence in neighboring Clovis. Founded in 1891, the city’s establishment is contributed to the coming of the Southern Pacific Railroad, the creation of a 45-mile log flume, and the opening of a 40-acre mill and finishing plant, along with increased grain production. The fledgling community was officially incorporated in 1912. Over the years, the city has experienced tremendous planned growth. Clovis was a modest town of merely 2,700 residents in 1950—a number that surged from 70,746 in 2000 to nearly 95,000 today. The size of the city has grown as well, now stretching over 23 square miles in the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area.
