Nampa

Five miles east of Caldwell is the city of Nampa, a vibrant economic, cultural, and tourist center. Its industry has built upon its initial success along the early railroads, and growing business has brought with it a high quality of life that includes top notch education, public services and economic opportunities.

Transportation & Location

Nampa, with a population of over 78,000, is the largest city in Canyon County, and the second largest in the state. Located 26 miles west of Boise along Interstate 84, Nampa is considered part of the Boise metropolitan area. Nampa also enjoys access to U.S. Highways 20, 26, 30 and 95.

The Boise Airport is located less than 20 minutes away, while the Nampa Municipal Airport serves corporate and general aviation aircraft and their related businesses.

Nampa began as a railroad town, and the Union Pacific rail systems still have a large commercial presence in the area. Nampa is also served by Valley Regional Transit bus system, which connects Nampa to Caldwell, Garden City, Meridian and Boise.

History

Oregon Short Line

Nampa was founded in 1886 as a small railroad town along the Oregon Short Line, and incorporated in 1891. Drawn by ideal logistic conditions, many businesses relocated to Nampa at the turn of the 20th century, including the Western Idaho Sugar Company and the Crescent Brewing Company.

The town continued to grow in population, and likewise in amenities and public services. Today Nampa boasts a thriving economy and an outstanding quality of life.

Health

Nampa is committed to ensuring the best possible health for its citizens. That is why it endorses Healthy Families Nampa, a unique organization of civic, business, religious, health and educational groups who together work to improve the well being of children, and develop good foundations for health, family and wellness.

Mercy Medical Center has a long history of serving the citizens of Nampa and the surrounding communities. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, the first Mercy hospital was built in Nampa in 1919. For 2 and a half years prior to construction of this facility, the Sisters of Mercy lived in tents near the eight-room frame house that served as a hospital so that the house could be fully devoted to patients.

Mercy Medical Center has a strong presence in Nampa and the surrounding areas and plays an important role in the economic well-being of the area by employing over 800 people who carry out Mercy’s mission of service to the community. In addition, nearly 200 volunteers donate over 30,000 hours annually in service to the patients and families of Mercy Medical Center.

A member of the non-profit Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) hospital system, Mercy is committed to core values of reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence. Mercy was recently recognized as one of the Top 50 Hospitals in the Country by Total Benchmarks Solution.

In 1968, the current Mercy Medical Center was constructed and is licensed as a 152-bed acute care facility. Since that time there have been many advancements including the addition of a computerized operating room, a digital diagnostic imaging system, and the opening of 21 state-of-the-art orthopedic/surgical suites. Mercy’s medical services are provided at Mercy Medical Center, Mercy North Health Center, Mercy Home Health and Hospice, and the Mercy Family Birthing Center all in Nampa, Idaho.

Recreation

Nampa is a vibrant town with much to do, from natural recreation to arts, culture and modern entertainment.

Nampa Civic Center

The Nampa Civic Center is the hub of cultural activity in Nampa. The 42,500-square-foot facility is host to countless performances year round, including conventions, musical performances, sporting events and more.

Fitness is an essential part of life in Nampa, and as such, the town provides a myriad of recreational opportunities. The city maintains 120 acres of public parks, with facilities including swimming pools, tennis courts, jogging paths, and more, while the Nampa Recreation Center offers a variety of leisure, educational and exercise programs and facilities.

Furthermore, the whole community celebrates the annual Snake River Dayz, a continuation of the old time harvest festival, which features food, concerts, games, a parade and a rodeo.

Education

Nampa is a community concerned with educating its residents, and has an excellent public school system, many private opportunities, and places of higher education.

The Nampa School District consists of seven preschools, six public kindergartens, 11 elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools.

There are also a number of institutions of higher learning, including Albertson College in Caldwell, Boise State University, Boise State University Selland College of Applied Technology in Nampa, and Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa.

Business

Nampa is fortunate to have a thriving economy, and coordinated efforts between the Nampa Chamber of Commerce, community organizations and the City of Nampa strive to foster a strong economic climate.

The Historic District in downtown Nampa is undergoing extensive redevelopment, making it a major shopping destination, and likewise a desirable place to locate a business.

With so much on the horizon, Nampa is bound to be even more prosperous in the years to come.
