DeKalb

As the western anchor to the booming I-88 Corridor, DeKalb, Illinois is only a little more than an hour away from both downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport, and a mere 30 minutes to the high-growth cities of Aurora and Naperville. In spite of its proximity to the Chicago region, DeKalb remains apart and maintains its own unique character as a thriving university community with both urban and rural roots.

DeKalb’s proximity to major markets and the community’s cultural and educational opportunities are primary reasons why the City is steadily growing. The 10,000-seat Convocation Center has become an important venue for big name events ranging from blues great BB King to the grace of the Lipizzaner Stallions. Small, homegrown entertainments are held throughout the year that include concerts, stage productions and films shown at the Egyptian Theatre, theatrical productions by the Stage Coach Players, the ever popular Farmer’s Market and a variety of art and street fairs, which help make DeKalb an interesting place to live.

The Downtown Mural Program was created in an effort to beautify the Downtown, and bring increased art and culture to the area in celebration of DeKalb’s unique community and rich history. The program recently experienced success with the addition of two murals in the series in the summer and fall of 2006, and expects the third to be added in the summer of 2007.

In February 2007, the City of DeKalb approved a Downtown Revitalization Plan. The City of DeKalb is looking forward to implementing refreshing and creative solutions to position this important corridor for strong and continuous economic revitalization for years to come.
