Easy access to major markets has made this area an attractive place to do business. Chicago sits a little more than one hour’s drive from the region, with the increasingly growing cities of Aurora and Naperville a mere 30 minutes away. The area also has access to both the Interstate 88 High-Tech Corridor and the Interstate 39 Logistics Corridor, another appealing aspect for locating a business to this section of the state.
Technological advances in the area are increasingly attracting more businesses, as the area sits within the proposed Northern Illinois Technology Triangle. This project aims to provide multi-gigabit capabilities to the area, which will induce a high-speed network and increase the region’s Internet bandwith. This growth in communication systems has put the region on the board as an even better site to bring in businesses of all sizes and types.
Many large distribution facilities have established themselves in the area, including Target, 3M, Nestle, Goodyear and Panduit. And with the strong presence of local colleges, including Northern Illinois University and its research capacities and Kishwaukee College, high-tech companies such as LMC Adiabatic and SCA/Alloyd have also made this area home. The area colleges also aid the business sector by bringing in a well-educated and motivated workforce.
Top employers in the region include Northern Illinois University, Kishwaukee Health System, Target Distribution Center, Wal-Mart Super Center, SCA/Alloyd, 3M and Nestle.
Agriculture is also a strong economic force in this area of the state, with an abundance of farmland used for a variety of products. The Center for Agriculture in the Environment works to maintain and preserve the country’s agricultural lands, and also strives to promote healthy practices while farming.
Additional resources for businesses in northern Illinois include local Chambers of Commerce, the Illinois Manufacturing Extension Center (IMEC), the EIGERlab, a premier research and development site used to study advanced manufacturing technologies, and the Better Business Bureau, among others.
