The use of alcohol and other drugs has been a fact of the American way of life since our nation’s beginning. Alcohol, in particular, has been used as a source of pleasure for some and a source of problems for others. Today substance abuse represents a major problem in American colleges and universities. A recent campus survey showed that about 79 percent of students drink alcoholic beverages. Of greater concern, however, is that as many as 15 percent of K-State students report having significant negative consequences as a result of their use of alcohol.
The K-State Alcohol and Other Drug Education Service program is focused on the K-State and Manhattan communities. The major purpose of the program is to provide accurate and timely information on the physical effects and social issues related to alcohol and other drug use. Information is provided via small groups, the Collegian newspaper, informational pamphlets, classroom presentations, and a newsletter. Other services provided include professional referral resources for campus and the community, consultation on special activities/events, non-alcoholic beverage recipes, Project ABC, and basic assessment and intervention assistance.
