Campaign for Nonviolence

What do yoga classes, an international news TV in the K-State Union, cleaning litter from Highway 177, and learning respectful communications skills have in common?

They all are ways students can bring healthy, dynamic balance to their relationships—large and small. They also represent various aspects of the nonviolence education programs at Kansas State University.

K-State’s nonviolence education programs are based on an anthropological definition of nonviolence developed by Dr. Susan L. Allen, director of nonviolence education. Projects are built around the notion of “every day nonviolence” and they address problems at all levels of human interaction, from self to environment.

Peace

For example, yoga helps us find better balance within our self. Watching views from the perspective of other cultures on our international news TV in the Union makes it possible to understand the complex world in which we live and thus helps bring balance to our world. Practicing conservation is one way to move our shared environment toward sustainability. Learning the ABCs of nonviolent communication is key to equitable and therefore safe interpersonal relationships.

Most of our work is carried out through the Campaign for Nonviolence, created in 2000. We also have a new nonviolence studies certificate program.
