Center for Child Development

The K-State Center for Child Development provides family-centered childcare in a professional and nurturing environment that meets the developmental and educational needs of children, incorporates the experiences and values of all families, and encourages children to explore their diverse world.

The center also provides a work site on campus for students who are interested in working with young children. Other services to the university include a site where students from all colleges can volunteer for class credit or as part of a class assignment. Students can conduct special projects, implement research, observe teachers and children, or participate in special activities.

Center for Child Development

Each year, the center serves more than 200 children of university residents, students, staff and faculty, and, when space is available, families in the community. The center has provided early care and education for young children on K-State’s campus since 1985. The program, comprised of a diverse population of families from all over the world, is licensed with the state of Kansas and partners with Smart Start, Army Childcare in Your Neighborhood, Early Head Start, City of Manhattan, and Unified School District 383 pre-K program. The center provides quality care and education for children whose parents study, teach, or work at the university. A variety of childcare subsidies are available, and the majority of parents enjoy significantly reduced childcare fees. The center’s services are directly related to the university’s community outreach and affirmative action goals.

The K-State Center for Child Development offers the following:

• Childcare for ages six weeks to 11 years
• Sliding fee scale based on family income
• Daily nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks
• Transportation to and from Manhattan public schools
• Individualized and nationally recognized curriculum and child assessment system
• Parent-teacher conferences twice a year
• Opportunities for parent involvement

The center’s professional staff is proud of its reputation for building lasting relationships with children and their families. The center is a community where staff and families really care and try to help each other with the difficult job of raising happy, capable children. The advisory board and staff’s vision is a center where children, families, and staff can build connections with each other, the larger community, and the natural world.

Teaching staff create individualized learning experiences for children by assessing each child’s interests, strengths, needs, and developmental progress. Teachers meet with each family twice a year to review assessment results and each child’s portfolio and work together to set individualized goals for each child. Teachers are always available throughout the year to meet with families to discuss any or all aspects of their children’s development.
