The McNair Scholars Program—named after Challenger shuttle astronaut and physicist Dr. Ronald E. McNair—prepares eligible undergraduates to succeed in graduate school and achieve doctoral degrees. To be eligible, students must either be low-income and first-generation (neither parent having a four-year college degree), or be a member of a group that is currently underrepresented in higher education.
At the heart of the program is a paid research internship that pairs McNair Scholars with K-State faculty mentors in their academic fields. Scholars present their research at conferences, submit their work for publication, and can receive funding to visit graduate schools. Many graduate schools waive application fees for McNair Scholars, and some offer fellowships. McNair Scholars can take the GRE, a standardized test for entrance into graduate school, at a reduced rate.
McNair Scholars attend weekly seminars and receive personal guidance from our professional staff in academic and career planning, graduate school applications, preparing for the GRE, developing their writing skills, and using technology in higher education.
The McNair Scholars Program, a federally funded TRIO program, is administered by the Department of Education. K-State received its first McNair grant in 1995 and serves 28 students per year.
