Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science Programs
The Upward Bound (UB) and Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Programs are only two TRIO Programs at Kansas State University. Inclusive are McNair and Student Support Services at Kansas State University. The K-State Upward Bound program has existed since 1973. Since then the program has served more than 3,000 young people from the local communities.
The Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science Programs are college preparatory programs for high school students. The target schools are Manhattan, Junction City, Riley County, Rock Creek, Highland Park, Hope Street Academy, and Wamego High Schools.
Students are selected for the program based on economic and educational regulations set by the federal government as well as a need for academic assistance to help prepare them for college.
The UB and UBMS Programs consist of a six-week component on the Kansas State University campus. During the summer, students are enrolled in academic instruction mathematics, science with a laboratory, composition, literature, and a foreign language.
The Upward Bound Math and Science Program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The program helps students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, and encourages them to pursue post-secondary degrees in math and science.
The high school graduates from UB and UBMS who have participated in these programs prior to graduation may then attend their first college session at the expense of the program. Students are enrolled at K-State for six college credits.
