While in town for a short stay or an extended visit, there is always something to see and do.
HISTORICAL SITES
Manhattan is brimming with history with nearly 20 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Prominent buildings that make the list include K-State’s Anderson Hall and the KSAC Radio Towers, Riley County Courthouse, Manhattan Carnegie Library Building, and Goodnow Memorial Home—the residence of the founder of Manhattan and Kansas State University. Three structures in Manhattan are listed on the Register of Historic Kansas Places. One, the Mattie Mails Coons House, is listed on the Manhattan Register of Historic Places.
History buffs can also take in the area’s rich past by visiting the Pioneer Log Cabin at City Park (circa 1915), furnished with farming, medicinal, and household tools of the period; Riley County Historical Museum, with the historic Hartford House located next door; and Wolf House Museum, a structure built in 1868 that houses an assortment of 19th-century period items today.
GARDENS AND ZOOS
Spend the day outside browsing through the beautiful blooming landscape composing the K-State Gardens. Nestled within the University’s campus, the horticultural display garden is still under development and will ultimately encompass 19 acres of land upon completion. Currently there are three collection gardens filled with daylilies, roses, and irises, plus three specialty gardens, including the Adaptive/Native Plant Garden, Butterfly Garden, and Cottage Garden. Future collections will be comprised of peonies and hostas. Further attractions within the K-State Gardens include the conservatory, visitor center, rose garden plaza, and bobcat sculptures.

Animal fans will relish the city’s Sunset Zoo. More than 330 animals representing over 100 species call this zoo home, including mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds, and invertebrates. In addition to the array of animal exhibits, the zoo offers educational programs and events along with opportunities for volunteer work. Sunset Zoo provides for an affordable day of fun with the family and is open seven days a week, 360 days a year.
A unique alternative to the popular animal zoo is the Kansas State University insect zoo, located in the old dairy barn on the college campus. Patrons are afforded an interactive experience while learning about the insects of the natural world and the roles played in the evolving ecosystem. Exhibits feature live insects and their arthropod relatives within a distinctly organic setting.
AGRITOURISM
Agriculture has been a top industry in the state of Kansas since the beginning, and Manhattan is no exception. While it has ample big-city amenities, the city offers a handful of agritourism opportunities. The greater Manhattan area is home to several working ranches, including the 70-acre Plumlee Buffalo Ranch; the 3,000-acre Sun Rock Ranch Resort (circa 1877); the Flint Hills Ranch Experience; the 2,000-acre Lazy N Ranch; and Munson Angus Farms, a fifth-generation working ranch. Britt’s Garden Acres is another great agriculture-related attraction, offering visitors of all ages exceptional you-pick opportunities, entertaining hayrides, and a seasonal pumpkin patch.

LODGING
For those travelers needing a place to rest at night, Manhattan offers nearly 900 comfortable guestrooms in around a dozen hotels and motels and eight quaint bed and breakfast inns. What’s more, the area is home to numerous public campgrounds, modern log cabins, and full-service RV hook-ups around Tuttle Creek Lake for those who enjoy sleeping under the stars. No matter what your lifestyle, the city offers something to meet any taste and budget.
