Arts

The Manhattan Arts Center is a true mecca of culture in the city. Under one roof, the Manhattan Arts Center offers a theatre season featuring four productions, plus the MACademy Youth Theatre; live musical performances; galleries highlighting works of local, regional, and national artists; a variety of art classes; and a number of other events.

In addition to showcasing K-State student theatre, dance, and music performances, the 1,800-seat McCain Auditorium and Nichols Hall welcome a variety of events ranging from Broadway hits, orchestras, and opera to Chinese acrobatics and the prestigious Landon Lecture Series.A significant asset to the arts community of Manhattan is the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. Opened in 1996 on the Kansas State University campus, the Beach Museum of Art’s collection has grown from less than 1,500 pieces of art to more than 4,500 and growing. Artists and artwork on the local, regional, national, and international levels are represented here through a diversity of exhibitions. Educational programming, tours, workshops, lectures, and a number of special events are also available through the museum. Further galleries on the K-State campus include the Chang Gallery, Chapman Gallery, and Kemper Art Gallery.

Entertainment

Don’t miss the Strecker-Nelson Gallery, situated in downtown Manhattan and standing as the oldest commercial art gallery in the state. The gallery presents a calendar year of changing exhibits featuring prominent Kansas artists.

The summer months bring about the nationally recognized Arts in the Park event. Sponsored by the City of Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department, Arts in the Park is a free, outdoor evening entertainment series held at City Park’s Larry Norvell Band Shell. A further significant cultural event drawing in 140,000-plus people to the Manhattan area is the Affiliated Foods Midwest Country Stampede. This four-day event is hailed as the Midwest’s largest country music festival, presenting country music’s hottest performers on five stages.
