Immerse yourself in Acadian history through several attractions in Lafayette.

Acadian Village, an extensive folk life museum, features a number of restored original period structures filled with local artifacts depicting Cajun life in the 19th century. The 23-acre Vermilionville also strives to recreate Acadian life between 1765 and 1890. Other Cajun historical and cultural sites not to miss include the Alexandre Mouton House & Lafayette Museum and the Jean Lafitte National Park Acadian Cultural Center.

Located in downtown Lafayette, the Lafayette Natural History Museum and Planetarium spans more than 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, featuring permanent and traveling exhibits, interactive displays, films, educational workshops and a modern planetarium. Children from toddlers up to 12 years of age and their families revel in the offerings of the Children’s Museum of Acadiana, with hands-on exhibits and programming highlighting a wide spectrum of topics.

The beautiful Zoo of Acadiana in neighboring Broussard is an attraction for animal lovers. The 45-acre park houses over 500 exotic animals representing more than 150 species within around 70 natural habitats. Patrons can feed a variety of primates, visit with alligators or take a ride on the Antelope Express through one of the zoo’s two Savannas—among many other attractions!

While in the downtown area, don’t forget to visit the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, a landmark built in 1916. And for those looking to take in the scenery of this region, hop on the Highway 93 Scenic Byway (a.k.a. “The Real French Destination”) or the Jean Lafitte Scenic Byway.
