There is much to do outdoors in Lafayette, which is situated within “The Sportsman’s Paradise” that is Louisiana. A favorable year ‘round climate draws in many who enjoy everything from championship golfing and hiking trails to canoe and kayak trips.

In addition to the sports and recreational endeavors found through the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department oversees around 1,500 acres of parkland in the parish, which includes 36 park sites, 10 recreation centers, four swimming pools, three public golf courses, two tennis centers and other areas utilized for the department’s programming.

Lafayette is the site of Acadiana Park Nature Station, an education and research area that spans 110 acres in the northeastern portion of the city. The Nature Station also boasts an adjoining three-mile nature trail.

Additional sites not to miss for outdoor activities include Lake Martin, the state’s largest colony for an assortment of water birds, and Fausse Point State Park, which is located at the edge of the Atchafalay Basin. Fausse Point offers miles of hiking trails, boat launches, campsites and opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. What’s more, birding enthusiasts can take advantage of America’s Wetland Birding Trail, which traverses 22 southern Louisiana parishes.
