TRIO
TRIO programs are grant-funded programs through the U.S. Department of Education, serving citizens who are first-generation college students (no parent/guardian has a four-year college degree), who meet income guidelines or who have a disability. Across the U.S., there are approximately 2,800 TRIO programs serving nearly one million Americans each year. Missouri State University receives funding for two such TRIO programs: the Student Support Services project, which is funded to serve 180 Missouri State University students, and the Upward Bound project, which is funded to serve 50 students at Central, Hillcrest and Parkview high schools in Springfield. Students interested in becoming a participant in either program, can contact the office and request an application.
Student Support Services
The following free services and activities for Student Support Services participants include, but is not limited to: academic advising; workshops in academic, personal and professional areas; financial aid and scholarship assistance; graduate school preparation, including assistance with entrance exams; first-year and second-year experience program; mentoring program; trips to colleges offering graduate programs; visits to area cultural events and activities; and paid admission for local cultural events.
Additionally, the program offers a stipend to participants who meet program requirements and who meet income guidelines.
Upward Bound
The following free services and activities for Upward Bound participants includes, but is not limited to: tutoring; study skills and test preparation workshops; monthly Saturday workshops; ACT/SAT preparatory workshops; financial aid and scholars information; postsecondary school information and assistance with applications; visits to college campuses; visits to area cultural attractions; and a six-week, summer enrichment program, which consists of five weeks of classes on the Missouri State campus and a week of travel to a metropolitan area. Additionally, students also receive stipends for their participation, up to $40/month during the academic year and $60/month during the summer.
