Letter from the Vice Chancellor

entrance

Welcome to the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Put simply, students ARE our thing. Our mission is to enhance the Mizzou student experience by creating an environment that helps our students grow and learn. A successful university experience comes from partnerships with students, their families, faculty and staff and the local community.

Student Affairs staff members work with students and their families before they even arrive on campus, ensuring that they have the information and resources necessary for a smooth transition from home to university life. Our diverse population of 28,000 students comes from every county in Missouri, every state in the nation and 100 countries. Many of these students come from towns with a population less than the number of people in our biggest residence halls, so it is important that we help students acclimate to their new environment by making the campus feel smaller.

In Student Affairs, our primary focus is to involve students in educationally purposeful activities while also meeting their basic living needs, including food, housing, textbooks and supplies, personal development and entertainment. Mizzou students can take advantage of nationally recognized programs and services through the following departments: Campus Dining Services, Counseling Services, Disability Services Residential Life, the Missouri Student Unions, Recreation Services & Facilities, Student Life and University Bookstores.

Student Affairs provides Mizzou students with the programs, facilities and services that support academic achievement, personal growth and community involvement. From where the students live and eat to where they study and interact with one another, Student Affairs promotes living and learning experiences that result in well-informed and socialized students who will make a difference in our society.

Facilities are being renovated and reconstructed with today’s students and future students in mind. Students live in new residence hall communities that are high-tech and comfortable, offering all of the amenities of home. The nationally acclaimed Student Recreation Complex provides students with wonderful recreational health and fitness opportunities. MU’s dining program continues to be recognized, receiving numerous awards including the prestigious Ivy Award for overall performance in food, service and hospitality. Plans are also underway to renovate and expand Brady Student Commons into a new Student Center, doubling the amount of space for students to meet, study, relax and dine.

You’ll read more on the following pages about how the Division of Student Affairs connects students to learning, service and leadership, and involvement opportunities at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Let me personally invite you to visit campus. I know you’ll be impressed with our talented students, excellent faculty and staff, and state-of-the-art facilities.
