Mizzou can seem like a large campus at first, but getting involved in programs and activities can help make the campus feel more like home. Students find that active participation in the classroom and through experiences held outside of the classroom will help to develop the kind of skills that employers from all fields find advantageous. Programs and services offered by the Department of Student Life provide students with social, cultural and educational opportunities that promote success and involvement outside of the classroom. Student Life sponsors more than 400 social, educational and cultural events a year. Students can get involved attending these events or they can join with staff, faculty and other students to plan events. Students gain practical experience with program planning and project management, participating in peer education programs, experience working with student-run media (television and radio) outlets, understanding of sound leadership and management practices, presentation skills, public speaking, appreciation of diversity, group dynamics, ethics and many others. The programs and services offered through Student Life are diverse and far-reaching. Students at Mizzou have a multitude of opportunities for personal growth and development outside the classroom. The following is a quick glimpse of four distinct areas.
Excellence Unit
Leadership development and community involvement programs offer an important step toward the development and achievement of
personal, academic, and professional goals. Service programs strive to connect students with local and national
agencies in directed, meaningful, quality volunteer experiences. Whether students want to volunteer individually or as part of a group, Student Life can assist them in
finding a service opportunity.
Venture Out offers opportunities for students to learn about group dynamics and teamwork through team-building courses. Participation in team-building courses builds trust and strengthens relationships. Students participating experienced improved communication and increased problem-solving skills.
New Student and Parent Programs helps both students and parents with the transition to college life. The New Student and Parent Programs office provides a connection to the university for parents through the Parents’ Association. Annual programs include Summer Welcome, Fall Welcome, Family Weekend and Greek Life.
Students involved in Greek Life will discover an incredible opportunity to enhance their college experience. Students within Greek Life learn and understand the values of scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood/sisterhood. Numerous opportunities exist to gain valuable leadership skills and participate in service-learning activities, enhance scholastic success, and find a welcoming community to call home.
Campus Activities Unit
Campus Activities provides a wide range of educational, social and
cultural activities, services and
programs which enhance the out-of-class experiences of MU students. Through 500 recognized student organizations, there are too many activities in any given year to count. Some favorite traditions include Fall Welcome Midnight Barbecue, Mizzou After Dark events, concerts and
lectures.
With so many activities going on at any given time, students can easily find out about upcoming events at stufftodo.missouri.edu or getinvolved.missouri.edu.
Social Justice Education and Advocacy Unit
Through social justice education and advocacy programs, students at Mizzou learn about responsibility — for oneself and others. It is also one of the ways that students find a home at MU. Centers available as a resource for students include the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center, the Multicultural Center, the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Resource Center and the Women’s Center. These centers offer advocacy and support for ethnic, gender, sexual orientation and religious minority student populations. These centers provide educational opportunities for majority populations to learn how to be more diverse and accepting in their interactions with minority populations. Each Center offers programs, services and resources to the
campus, and provides
students with opportunities for involvement and personal growth through planning
programs, working as staff, or
serving as Peer Educators.
The Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center is the primary support and programming center for the African American student population on campus.
The LGBT Resource Center provides support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, faculty and staff and organizes Safe Space Training for campus groups and individuals who want to identify as allies. The Multicultural Center provides support for ethnic/racial/religious student populations on campus and serves as campus liaison with the Association of Campus Religious Advisors.
The Women’s Center provides programs, services and resources to the campus on topics such as self esteem, body image and healthy relationships. It also helps implement campus-wide events such as The Vagina Monologues and Women’s History Month.
Prevention Unit
Students interested in the Wellness Resource Center (WRC) experience more than 200 programs on
topics such as nutrition, self esteem, stress reduction, alcohol and other drug abuse, eating disorders,
gambling and smoking. Some students take
advantage of nutrition analysis, diabetes screening, and alcohol and other drug counseling and referral. Students at MU receive guidance about their rights and responsibilities through the Office of Judicial Services. The office also has the primary responsibility of enforcing the rules and regulations of the University of Missouri.
Student Legal Services offers students free legal consultation, provides educational programs, legal tips and online legal resources to the student body.
The Rape Education Program educates the campus about issues of sexual and relationship violence. We know that students learn well from other students, so several student groups are involved with carrying out this work, including peer educators, an organization of men who are concerned about violence against women, and a group of Greek students. The Rape Education Program facilitates discussions and trainings, plans campus-wide events and provides a variety of resources and referral information on sexual and relationship violence.
