Public Transportation

Ground Transportation:
Columbia sits in between the major cities of Kansas City and St. Louis, both attainable through the city’s main east/west artery, Interstate 70. Both Interstate 70 and U.S. 63, which runs north/south, intersect at the heart of Columbia, offering access to surrounding Interstates 29, 35, 44 and 55. The city’s well-organized thoroughfare system affords commuters easy trips in and out of Columbia. A mere 10 minutes from Columbia is the Columbia Regional Airport, offering daily US Airways Express flights to Kansas City International Airport.

Public Transportation:
Bus services are provided by Columbia Transit and Paratransit, which provides residents with eight individual routes to sites across the area. Currently, 1.2 million passengers board annually along the system’s eight fixed routes and two University Shuttle routes. The system is constantly experiencing growth in service and technology. Students may also use the Greyhound bus line, which offers travel to cities across the country. Columbia’s terminal railroad, COLT, offers commuter service to any locale in central Missouri. In addition to COLT, an Amtrak station is located only 30 minutes from Columbia in Jefferson City.

Non-motorized Transportation:
Columbia’s mayor, Darwin Hindman, strongly supports a non-motorized transportation system, and can often be seen riding his bicycle around the city. Columbia is also known for its M.K.T. spur of the Katy Trail State Park, which allows foot and bike traffic across the city, and conceivably, the state. It consists of a soft gravel surface excellent for running and biking. Columbia also is preparing to embark on construction of several new bike paths and street bike lanes thanks to a $25 million grant from the U.S. government. Many faculty, staff and students enjoy the chance to commute to campus utilizing this efficient and safe method of travel during warmer months.
