No matter how well Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) students prepare for college, they may experience a moment when they need help understanding a concept, smoothing out a thesis statement, solving a particular problem or managing their time more effectively.
Educational Services for Students (ESS) offers well-received resources for our students when they need that extra academic support.
Last year, 475 students sought individual tutoring in 86 courses and gave their tutors a 98% approval rating. These students praised their tutors with comments such as “My tutor is friendly, straightforward and informative,” and my tutoring session was “always excellent and productive” and “encouraged critical thinking.”
ESS also sponsors Supplemental Instruction (or SI, as it’s also known on campus.) SI is offered for about 25 first- and second-year courses each year. SI leaders are excellent students nominated by the faculty to assist in science and engineering courses and to hold weekly review sessions.
And like tutoring, SI leaders also receive high marks with 1,565 students attending 390 sessions and offering a 90% approval rating last year. Students have described their SI leaders as “very valuable to my understanding and exam preparation” and “prepared with practice problems and very willing to answer any questions.”
ESS staff members also meet with students interested in enhancing their study skills and time management strategies. ESS is also the office that works with students with disabilities and that advocates for commuter students.

The ESS website (ess.case.edu) provides valuable electronic resources including a series of study skills handouts called SuccESS Strategies as well as Beyond Typing: The Students’ Guide to Writing, which provides online writing support.
ESS offers strategic learning experiences both for students seeking academic support and for those students serving as Peer Tutors, SI Leaders, SAGES Writing Assistants and Commuter Assistants.
