Office of Multicultural Affairs

Nestled in the middle of University Circle and a historically African American community, Case Western Reserve University cannot help but embrace diversity and inclusion. Its distinctive connection to Cleveland goes beyond its borders to include partnerships with school districts, small businesses, corporations and neighboring colleges and universities.

Our commitment to providing diverse experiences formally began in the 1980s with the establishment of the Minority Engineering Opportunities Program (MEOP). The program provided a plethora of services to Cleveland city students transitioning to college in the field of engineering and allowed first-year students to spend five weeks during the summer on campus preparing to attend Case.

In the mid-1990s, the university extended its commitment to underrepresented students by creating the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). Espousing the theme “Think, Lead, and Act Globally,” OMA encourages, supports and facilitates the success of all Case students by providing opportunities for diverse interaction and cultural education that occurs outside of the classroom.

OMA also provides a reliable, multi-faceted support system where students can come and interact in a “home away from home” environment. Often, students utilize the OMA as a resource as they work through different challenges that arise in a college environment. The OMA strives to meet these challenges by providing an honest and caring atmosphere that is sensitive to students’ needs.

Building a “Sense of Community” As Case is a truly diverse, multicultural campus, the OMA's services embrace all Case students, faculty and university staff. Our responsibilities include providing guidance to the university to ensure that Case is a culturally sensitive environment that values and celebrates diversity.

We Value Diversity Diversity is a reality created by unique individuals and groups from a broad spectrum of demographic and philosophical perspectives. OMA values and celebrates diversity across the spectrum and is committed to thinking, leading and acting from a global perspective.

Multicultural Enrichment OMA staff members provide support to individuals with diverse backgrounds who wish to actively explore diversity. We are available to discuss any topics related to multiculturalism.

Academic Support and Guidance The goal of the OMA is to assist students in being successful during their time at Case. OMA reviews how students are performing academically. Students who can benefit from academic support are identified and directed to obtain assistance. Students are encouraged to take advantage of tutors who are provided in the Office of Educational Services for Students.

Networking and Mentoring Opportunities The OMA provides students with professional networking/mentorship opportunities, skill-building workshops, job/internship opportunities and access to a number of occupational/educational publications. OMA works in collaboration with the Career Center to ensure that students are well prepared as they enter a competitive and dynamic workforce and provides students with positive role models/mentors to provide guidance and support as they navigate through obstacles of college life.

Annual Unity Banquet The reception is followed by a dinner recognizing the academic achievements of Case underrepresented students. In addition to earning a cumulative 3.5 GPA, these students participate in various social organizations, community service and various Greek organizations.
