Wright State University will be a catalyst for educational excellence in the Miami Valley, meeting the need for an educated citizenry dedicated to lifelong learning and service. To those ends, Wright State will provide: access to scholarship and learning; economic and technological development;
leadership in health, education, and human services; cultural enhancement; and international understanding, while fostering collegial involvement and responsibility for continuous improvement of education and research.
Legacy
Named for Orville and Wilbur Wright, the inventors of powered flight, Wright State University has reached new heights of innovation in its 40-year existence. Wright State’s exceptional talent, pioneering research, and community involvement honor the spirit of its namesakes.
Both came from humble beginnings—the Wright brothers from a simple bicycle shop, Wright State University from a single building standing alone in a cornfield. Through
determination, talent, and hard work, both have received international recognition for their successes.
The Wright Brothers Collection
In 1975, the Wright family deeded to Wright State University the Wright Brothers Collection. Housed in Special Collections and Archives in the Wright State University Libraries, it is one of the most complete collections of Wright material in the world. It includes the Wrights’ own technical drawings and personal library, family papers including letters, diaries, financial records, genealogical files, and other documents detailing the lives and work of Wilbur and Orville Wright and the Wright family. Perhaps the most valuable part of the collection are the thousands of photographs documenting the invention of the airplane and the lives of the Wright family.
Special Collections and Archives earned worldwide respect and recognition for its efforts to collect, preserve, and make available the history of aviation during the centennial of powered flight in 2003. Dedicated professional staff successfully handled hundreds of requests from around the world for research, photographs, and information for documentaries, books, symposiums, articles, and films. Outreach efforts included exhibits, scholarly papers and articles, publications, symposiums, and hundreds of tours and presentations.
Celebrating the legacy of the Wright brothers, Wright State University embraces their spirit of creativity, innovation, and dedication. With its dedication to excellence in teaching, research, and service, Wright State is a dynamic memorial to the achievements of the Wright brothers.
