College Introduction

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has been educating students for nearly 100 years. Since 1911, when East Tennessee Normal School opened its doors to train teachers, ETSU has grown to become the region’s only four-year comprehensive university and the flagship health sciences university in the Tennessee Board of Regents system.

ETSU is comprised of 11 colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Business and Technology; the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences; the Claudius G. Clemmer College of Education; the James H. Quillen College of Medicine; the College of Nursing; the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy; the College of Public Health; the School of Continuing Studies; the School of Graduate Studies; and the Honors College.

Named a “Best Southeastern College” by The Princeton Review, ETSU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Quillen College of Medicine has ranked high in the U.S. News & World Report’s publication, “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” for its work in rural medicine. In 2008, the medical school was ranked No. 4 in the nation in this discipline.

The university values a liberal arts education for all undergraduate students and places special emphasis on competence in critical thinking, mathematics, writing, oral communication and information technology. In addition to degree programs for residential and commuting students, ETSU offers many programs online or at sites beyond the main campus.

Community-based learning

As a doctoral research-intensive university, ETSU seeks to provide an environment that encourages and enables faculty, students, and staff to produce and disseminate the highest quality scholarly and creative work. To sustain and enhance this environment, ETSU seeks to secure financial support for research and creative programs through partnerships with its broader communities.

Community-based learning and service learning are prominent features of undergraduate and graduate education at ETSU. The university offers students the opportunity to give back to the community through its nationally recognized service-learning program. Academic programs including Storytelling and Bluegrass and Country Music reflect ETSU’s commitment to honoring and preserving the traditions and culture of its service region. The university’s Division of Health Sciences seeks to support the health and wellness of the people of Southern Appalachia, with special emphasis on meeting the needs of rural populations.

ETSU has availed itself of the region’s natural resources, specifically a significant May 2000 paleontological find. The discovery of prehistoric plant and animal remains during road construction near the community of Gray, Tenn., eventually led the university to begin offering academic programs associated with the find. With the assistance of the state of Tennessee, the ETSU and General Shale Brick Natural History Museum and Visitor Center is located at the Gray Fossil Site.

Community

ETSU currently sponsors 17 intercollegiate sports and participates at the NCAA Division I level in all sports. As a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, ETSU offers men’s sports in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field, and women’s sports in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. In 2009, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the ETSU men won the Atlantic Sun Indoor Track Conference Championship, and the men’s and women’s tennis teams brought home regular season conference titles. The men’s golf team is consistently ranked nationally.
