Campus Recreation

ETSU’s Department of Campus Recreation provides high-quality recreational facilities, programs and services for the entire campus community. Campus Recreation operates out of the Basler Center for Physical Activity (BCPA), a 100,000-square-foot facility that serves as the foundation for recreational sports and physical fitness programs for the ETSU community. The Basler Center provides necessary space to offer five areas of recreational programming: fitness, intramurals, non-credit instruction, outdoor adventure and sports clubs.

Creating marketable, meaningful work experiences for student workers is very important to the department. Campus Recreation is the largest single employer of student workers in the university, with well over 100 student workers on staff at any given time. The development of new programs and the expansion of existing programs are constantly providing more opportunities to employ and train student workers.

The Campus Recreation department receives funding from student fees, which makes it possible for ETSU to offer numerous recreation opportunities to the campus community. The fitness program offers a 15,000-square-foot weight room, basketball and racquetball courts, an indoor swimming pool, an eighth-mile indoor track, as well as structured non-credit instruction classes taught by highly trained and certified instructors. A new yoga program also provides a variety of sessions conducive to the integration of mind, body and spirit.

The intramural sports program provides structured leagues and tournaments for team and individual competition. The program, which serves more than 1,800 participants and is led by a professional staff member, utilizes more than 30 student workers who supervise, program and officiate the leagues and tournaments.

The outdoor adventure program hosts a 40-foot indoor climbing wall, team and group building services on the Basler Challenge course, and off-campus trips that allow students to enjoy the Southern Appalachian region and beyond.

Sports clubs provide an avenue for student leadership in an athletic environment by allowing student-organized and operated sports teams to compete against those from other colleges and universities. Students who are interested and committed enough to start a sports club are welcome and encouraged to do so.
