Disability Services

ETSU’s Office of Disability Services serves as a central clearinghouse for disability access to all of the university’s programs and activities. Located on the third floor of the D. P. Culp University Center, Disability Services reviews disability documentation and identifies accommodations that reduce the impact of the disability so students with disabilities can benefit from their full college experience. Support services are available for students with documented physical, mental or medical disabilities.

Students are not required to contact Disability Services before they are admitted to the university, but students with documented disabilities are encouraged to stop by Disability Services during their campus visit. The Disability Services staff can assist students in obtaining accommodations for placement tests, evaluate requests for a waiver of a high deficiency, or assist students in planning a manageable schedule for their first semester.

Accommodations are individualized on a case-by-case basis, but some accommodations require advance planning. Making early contact with Disability Services also allows the staff to coordinate accommodations such as books in alternative formats for students who have print-related disabilities or interpreters and transcribers for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Disability Services encourages students to be involved in campus organizations and leadership opportunities. The department sponsors personal growth and awareness workshops to help students improve their organizational skills, including note-taking and test-taking. The department advises the Psi chapter of Delta Alpha Pi, an international honor society for students with disabilities, and the Silent Bucs, an organization for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing or who want to learn more about deafness. Disability Services also sponsors Thunder Down Under, a community service and intramural student organization.
