Transportation

Johnson City sits at the crossroads of the eastern U.S., placing it within a day’s drive of more than half of the nation’s population. It is located at the junction of Interstates 81 and 26, with easy access to U.S. Routes 11, 19, 23, 321 and 421, as well as a multitude of State Routes and a network of local thoroughfares.

Johnson City’s mass transit service, the Johnson City Transit System (JCT), operates a fixed route bus service in the community—which includes the Bucshot service on and around the ETSU campus—as well as paratransit service and demand-response call-in service for those in need of public transport to major commercial, institutional and residential destinations in the city. The Transit Center at 137 W. Market St. not only serves as a transfer point for JCT riders, but also accommodates Greyhound and local taxi companies.

Location

Several municipal airports are strategically located throughout the area, offering general aviation services, along with corporate and charter flights for the local business community. For commercial travel options, the Tri-Cities Regional Airport, TN/VA (TRI) is easily reached via I-81. TRI is served by several airlines, including Allegiant Air, Delta Connection, Northwest Airlink and US Airways Express, which provide a number of daily non-stop flights to eight regional destinations. From the Tri-Cities, travelers can reach the major hubs of Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, Memphis, Orlando and Tampa Bay.
