Unmatched opportunities for active and passive recreation, both indoors and outdoors, are abundant in Johnson City TN and its surrounding area. Hikers enjoy the famed Appalachian Trail, which winds through part of Unicoi County, while water sports enthusiasts regularly visit Boone Lake and Watauga Lake in the summertime. Hunters visit during regular seasons to pursue deer, turkey, black bear, and elk, and one cannot forget the outstanding golf offerings. The Johnson City Country Club, the Ridges Golf Course, and the City-operated Pine Oaks and Buffalo Valley Golf courses have all played a role in the Tri-Cities’ recognition as the #2 Best Place to Play Golf in the U.S. (Golf Digest).
While in the area, also make sure to schedule a trip to Roan Mountain State Park, which is composed of 2,000-plus acres of southern Appalachian forest. Located at the base of Roan Mountain, the park is fantastic for camping, fishing along the Doe River, swimming, nature programming, wildlife viewing, hiking on 12 miles of trails, and mountain biking on 2.25 miles of trails.
